Quimera Tribe Ceremonial Retreat

Shamanic Fusion Dance + Sacred Ceremonies
A week in MEXICO!

Let the magic begin…

Are you ready to experience a profound embodiment of inner peace and awaken your spiritual connection to performance through Dance and Ceremony? Do you want an intensive understanding of the work? The Iseums of Quimera from the Bay Area and from LA will gather in ceremony and celebration for a week long retreat in Rosarito, Mexico Aug 13-20 2017.

By learning the Tribal Secrets of dance, every cell in your body will understand dance more fully, and your technique will improve exponentially. Ultimately, you will walk away with a deeper understanding of your own authentic self.

In one week you will master advanced concepts of dance technique, and you will discover deep levels about yourself and your profound ability as a performer.  We will create a performance to offer to the public, co-sponsored by IMAC, Instituto Municipal de Arte y Cultura, in Rosarito, Mexico!

Depending on which shaman are available, we may have the opportunity to do sweat lodges, fire walks, sound healing, energy healing, and vision/medicine journeys!

The coast of Mexico offers a sanctuary from the stresses of everyday life where we can retreat into a focused world of dance and ceremony, with time every day to indulge in the gifts of the ocean and the medicine of the beach. Rosarito, Mexico is a highly spiritually evolved community with several healing sanctuaries and shamans of many forms. As we dive into the teaching of this form, we will walk with the shamans to purify our bodies so that we can be more authentic in our representation of our true self. You will journey into your own inner healing through ancient rituals and ceremonies, allowing you to become a more effective teacher and dancer.

After more than 30 years as a professional dancer, Anandha has developed an understanding of how to reveal Tribal Secrets in a manner that allows you to embody and understand dance in a way that propels your dancing to the next stage -right away.

After more than 10 trips to Rosarito, Anandha has connected with a spiritual community and can guide you safely through a variety of off-the-beaten-path experiences!

Bathe in the confidence that this retreat will bring you to embody your highest level of performance while enhancing your athletic ability and spiritual connection to dance!

Steep in the awareness of the exotic nature of this retreat and the rekindling of inner peace and spiritual balance!

By the end of this retreat you will feel in every cell of your body profound changes in your dancing, your sense of self.

As a DANCER you will embody:

  • the connection you have to the sacred and how you can use movement and shamanic practices to deepen your sense of spiritual well-being and joy
  • more invigorated and confident skill in dance
  • more passion for performance
  • a deeper understanding of how dance communicates and what makes dance meaningful to audience
  • how to create spiritually inspired dances that touch the viewer’s heart and soul
  • a profound confidence in sharing amazing and creative performances
  • more connection to other dancers who, like you, seek dance as a means to spiritual fulfillment for themselves and for the viewers.

When I’m in Anandha’s teachings, I am existing in a profound, sacred, safe haven that exists outside the boundaries of ordinary time, the patriarchal structure, and social conditioning. She helped me to find my wings as a dancer, and to take flight within my own form. With Anandha, I have experienced an awakening to shamanic movement while learning incredible dance technique.

Things flow differently in Mexico than in the US. With that in mind, our schedule is subject to change. Although we make every effort to secure agreements, things just flow differently in Mexico and slight changes may occur as a result. Rest assured though, this will be an amazing -flowing- experience.  Know that the below schedule is estimated and remain not attached to exactly what we do or when.  We’ll make this a remarkable retreat, whatever comes to us by the will of the Goddess.

Aug 13 ~ Sunday

We will meet at the hotel at 3:00 pm.

After we settle in at the hotel, we will check out the beach together and visit. Both Bay Area and LA Iseums will be gathering again!  Then we will gather for our first delicious organic meal and ceremony together.

After dinner there is time for journaling, visiting, meditating or just hanging out by the infinity pool or hot tub as desired.

Aug 14~ Monday

After a relaxed morning, breakfast will arrive at 8:30. We will linger over a leisurely meal every morning, and gather to leave at 10:00 to go to the dance studio for classes.

EVERYDAY we will take DANCE CLASS from 10:30 – 12:00, break for a catered lunch at the studio,
and then DANCE LAB AND REHEARSAL from 12:30 – 4:00.

At 4:00 we will head back to the luxurious hotel and spend the afternoon integrating what you learned while you relax on the beach, in one of the pools or hot tubs, grab a coffee at the restaurant, take naps, journal, meditate or getting to know each other.

In the evening we will be treated to the mastery of the shamans that are available.

As an example: IF ALL GOES ACCORDING TO PLAN there may be a SWEAT LODGE this first day.

Why Sweat lodge?
In the sweat lodge we will purify our physical and spiritual vessels that the work we do this week will be of the highest spiritual nature and in the best interest of ourselves, each other, our close relatives and friends, our community and the planet. We each offer our individual prayers and set our intentions for the week and thereafter.

Aug 15 ~ Tuesday

Screen Shot 2016-08-08 at 2.35.58 PMEach morning we will have a leisurely start and then retreat into the dance studio to absorb as much as you can about sacred dance and to transform your dancing remarkably in just one week!

8:30 Breakfast
10:00 departure for the studio
10:30 – 12:00 Intuitive Technique CLASS
12 catered lunch
12:30 – 4:00 rehearsals for our performance

Each afternoon there will be a time of rest and integration where you have time to incorporate what you need.

This evening there may be an options for a medicine ceremony.  As I said about Mexico, we have to be fluid with our plans as things change, people don’t like to schedule so far in advance as we do, and contracts are not binding as they are in the US.

Aug 16 ~ Wednesday

We will gather for another day of sacred dance, healthy meals and periods of rest and integration.

8:30 Breakfast
10:00 departure for the studio
10:30 – 12:00 Intuitive Technique CLASS
12 catered lunch
12:30 – 4:00 rehearsals for our performance

This evening after dinner we will meet again.  One thing we will do a couple of times in the course of the week is to hold discussion groups where we will address aspects of teaching Shamanic Fusion Dance as PERFORMANCE AND RITUAL.

We will experience and learn to teach Intuitive Technique, Waking Dreams and a basic structure of a performance ritual that can be incorporated into private or public performances.

Aug 17 ~ Thursday

8:30 Breakfast
10:00 departure for the studioIMG_6526
10:30 – 12:00 Intuitive Technique CLASS
12 catered lunch
12:30 – 4:00 rehearsals for our performance

After another leisurely morning and a retreat into sacred dance until the afternoon, one of the things you might be treated to is an afternoon SHOPPING EXCURSION to the Artists Market in downtown Rosarito. There is an alleyway with dozens of merchants, most selling tourist trinkets and souvenirs and some selling hand made leather items, paintings and crafts.

If we make it to the market one afternoon, you may choose to eat out at a local restaurant in Rosarito if you’d like!  Each person will be responsible to pay for their own meals at restaurants.  The catered dinner will be available at the hotel as usual.

Aug 18 ~ Friday

We will adventure to a lovely small theater in Rosarito and make our final preparations for our performance offering on this evening!

We are currently being co-sponsored by CEART Rosarito, but it is under new management and that contract is being re-negotiated.  Should that fall through, there is another possible sponsor at IMAC (Instituto Municipal de Arte y Cultura) in the theater in the town square of Rosarito.  Last back-up plan is to perform at the hotel, which is what we did last time and it was really fun.  Like I said… Mexico is fluid.

Aug 19 ~ Saturday

In a culmination of the newfound inner strength we have nurtured in the retreat, we just might arise early this day and journey to the magical mountainous lands of Tecate’ where we will retreat into sacred grounds and meet with a local shaman who will guide us in a sweat lodge and a fire walk ceremony.

If by chance this is not available, we will dive into another magical day of adventure in Mexico!

Remain unattached to the exact schedule, and all will be revealed as the Goddess wishes!

Aug 20~ Sunday

We will rise early on this last morning and great the sunrise as we bask in the memories of the week.

After an early morning breakfast we will depart to return to the US.  As border crossing times can be long -plan for 2-3 hours but it could be 5!- and since the waits get longer as the day wears on, we will head to the border early, leaving the hotel before 7:00 am.

Even so… for ease of mind, plan your flights home from the San Diego airport no earlier than 3:00 pm.  We can always hang out in the US if we arrive early, and in the case that  the border wait is extremely long you probably won’t miss your flight if it’s after 3:00.

A week on the beach
Spend a week on a private beach listening to the loud roar of the ocean, smelling the salty sea air, feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin, sinking your feet into the velvety sand, and if you choose, swimming out into the glorious waves and tasting the fulfillment of mother-ocean’s beauty.

Shared Housing
We will live as a family, interacting as loving sisters (and brothers if there are men present),

• sharing rooms in a beautiful, spacious, resort hotel that sits on a cliff overlooking the ocean, with a short set of stairs to the private beach.

There are many places to rest and restore including a grassy back yard, large patios, pools, hot tubs, a restaurant, a bar, and more!

The price includes sharing a bed, with 4 initiates in each spacious hacienda style bedroom with 2 queen beds and a small refrigerator, a large bathroom and a sitting area.  Living in this communal environment is an amazingly bonding experience.  You will be assigned rooms, and probably will share a room with someone you don’t know well. As a Priestess Initiate, this is one of the lessons you will live. It is frightening for some to think of a whole week with others you don’t know well… and by the end of the week an incredible bond is forged throughout the entire Iseum!

Family Style Organic Dining
Each day you will be treated to three delicious catered meals; creative Mexican cuisine cooked and delivered by organic chef Jorge Wong. All meals are vegan, organic with gluten free options, and are created in an atmosphere of love at Baja Produce, an organic café and market owned by Jorge’s mother Fernanda Sanchez. The goal of our meals is to spend the week purifying our bodies through the intake of foods that are fresh and cleansing.

However, if you enjoy meat in your daily intake, you are free to purchase additional food on your free time! There are two authentic Mexican taco stands walking distance from our beautiful hotel, a restaurant on-site and a restaurant within walking distance as well!  There is time every afternoon to visit the local delicious taqueria to your heart’s content. The food served at this stand is highest quality and so delicious!

NOTE: Any purchased food is at the expense of those who chose to purchase it, and not covered in the expenses of the retreat.

Dance from 10:00 – 4:00 each day!
Each day we will dive into our own private world of sacred dance and ceremony; you will enjoy remarkably satisfying classes that will increase your dance technique and enhance your ability to take risk in movement… classes that will develop your understanding of how dance communicates to an audience and what keeps their attention… classes that uncover blocks to your creativity and reprogram unhealthy belief systems that can sabotage your success… classes that help you to create amazingly profound, stunning performances!

And then we will dive into rehearsals, becoming the creatrix of your own authentic movement style!

Spend a week in a healing vortex!
Rosarito is a healing vortex that attracts many shamans and healing centers. We will adventure to meet many of them!

If all of our plans pan out as expected… WE HOPE the retreat will culminate in a trip to the magical, mystical lands of Tecate’ where we will have a fire walk ceremony. Having walked through the figurative rings of fire as we purify and dive into deep healing and growth during the week, we will honor that work through actually walking on fire in ceremony.

Yes, we will dance on hot coals! This ceremony brings up fear in most people who read about it, but our shaman has even lead 6 year-old children through this ritual! And I can vouch for it as I have done it and survived with my skin 100% safe!!!!  HOPEFULLY he will be available and nature cooperates (it was too windy last year and we had to cancel).

Anandha Ray’s depth of experience as a Dancer, Teacher, Healer, Channeler, Priestess and Guide wove together an amazingly crafted journey for us to seamlessly dive into uncharted, subconscious territory and feel fully held in Grace and Strength so that we may be able to navigate through our own shadows and lights.

What’s Not Included

• Your Travel expenses. Plan to meet us at Las Rocas by 3:00 pm Sunday Aug 13.  If you fly into San Diego and rent a car, plan for a morning arrival to give yourself time to rent a car and cross the border.  If you rent, rent from Alamo (they let you cross to Mexico).

• If you drive be sure to get Mexican Insurance for your car!
You car, your insurance carrier ($10-25 a day)…   Alamo, Alamo Mexican insurance ($35-40 a day)

• Snacks and extra foods you might wish beyond the three, delicious purifying catered meals each day

What To Bring

This list may change as we get closer to the retreat.  Mexico is a fluid country and things change rapidly.  I can’t guarantee which shaman will be available nor which experiences we might have… but here is a sampling of what you MIGHT need:

  • Comfortable clothes to dance in everyday (layers in case it is hot or cold)
  • Beach wear (suits and cover ups)
  • Maybe: a sweat lodge dress (covering the shoulders/knees: note it will get soaking wet). Fast-drying comfortable fabric
  • Maybe: White Ceremonial Clothes (dress, skirts, pants, whatever you prefer, any style, SOLID white)
  • A white costume for your performance
  • Toiletries (favorite shampoos, soap, toothpaste, make-up as desired)
  • A journal
  • A water bottle
Getting to the Retreat...

It is up to each of you to make travel arrangements to get to Rosarito directly either driving your car,
or to fly to the San Diego Airport AND RENT A CAR.

Driving to the Retreat...

Driving to Rosarito:

It is easy to drive to Rosarito, just 90 minutes south of the San Diego airport!  Use GPS to get directions to the Las Rocas Resort in Rosarito – it is a straight shot to get there. Carpool when you can of course, several will drive from LA and from the Bay Area. The car will need to have Mexican insurance -which you get by contacting your insurance provider.

COST: It should be about $10-25 a day for the insurance from your own carrier, so share the cost with those who ride with you!

Plan to meet at the hotel at about 3:00.

• Once you use GPS directions get to Rosarito – PASS Rosarito and stay on the toll-road until you get to the exit marked:

                  “La Palma/Popotla/Calafia” EXIT

• Look for the 7/11 as a landmark. Get off right into the area of a gas station (it kind of feels like you are driving in their lot).
• TURN LEFT onto the free road.
• Go about 5-ish minutes – look for the HUGE JESUS statue on the left.  Las Rocas is RIGHT in front of Jesus – on the coast side (right).

Getting home:

Anandha knows how to get a Medical Pass to get through the border more quickly.  It costs $45 and she will need to have the exact names of who is riding in your car and your car license number (no changes or it is invalid). She can get them a couple of days before we leave Rosarito (she has to get them while we are in Mexico). This saves time waiting at the border crossing. Anandha is doing this, so let her know if you are interested in getting one as well.

Fly and rent a car...

If you are going to fly and rent a car:

FLIGHT: Plan to arrive at the San Diego airport in the MORNING HOURS.

CAR RENTAL: • Rent from Alamo (Mexico travel is OK).
• Tell them you need a car that can be driven across the border to Mexico (not all can).
• Plan to pick up your car by noon so you have plenty of time to drive to Mexico by 3:00.

• After you pick up your luggage, go to the rental car shuttle for Alamo.  They will take you to the Alamo car rental.
• When there you have to tell them you are renting to go to Mexico, and pay the $35-40 a DAY Mexico insurance.
• They will give you a map but your phone service GPS should work just fine to get you to Rosarito.
There is one long highway along the coast.
• Drive across the border to Rosarito (about a 90 minute drive from the airport), and then drive through Rosarito about 15 more minutes to Las Rocas Resort.  You will be on a toll-road (there is a free road lower on the right side but it is very slow going).  The toll-road is a fast freeway with no stops except to pay the fee (-$3 I think).

• Once you GPS directions get to Rosarito, you PASS Rosarito and you can stay on the toll-road until you get to the exit marked:

                  “La Palma/Popotla/Calafia” EXIT

• Look for the 7/11 as a land mark.  You get off right into the area of a gas station (it kind of feels like you are driving in their lot).
• TURN LEFT onto the free road.
• Go about 5-ish minutes -look for the HUGE JESUS statue on the left.  Las Rocas is RIGHT in front of Jesus – on the coast side (right).

It is best to plan to depart after 3 pm on Sunday, Aug 20.
You can do as you wish but Anandha will leave the hotel Sunday morning by 7 am and is happy to lead a caravan.  Getting to the border can be tricky (even with GPS). This will mean that if all goes well, she will probably arrive at the airport in the morning hours -at least by noon, but the border crossing is really tricky so making a later flight will keep you from worrying about missing your flight if the border crossing takes hours.

This is what Anandha will do.

  • You will need a current passport –  no visa is needed for travel to Rosarito.
  • Most phone companies have Mexico options now, so your current plan can be used in Mexico for no charge or a low fee. Generally you can call 611 on your phone and inquire about Mexico phone use.  Be sure to check before you go, in case there are restrictions.
  • No one drinks the water in Mexico, but few people do in the US either! Just be sure to use bottled water.
  • If you drive: you must have Mexican insurance. It is illegal not to. Contact your insurance provider for details.
  • Baja, Mexico is largely supported by income from tourists and thus the locals tend to be very friendly.  Nonetheless,
whenever you travel to a foreign place caution is always the best rule of thumb.
  • When going into public, travel with a group and follow the advice of the group leader.  Do NOT travel alone at any time, especially at night.
  • Many people speak English. It is pretty easy to communicate with most people, but it never hurts to have a translation app on your phone when shopping so that you can ask questions!
  • Tipping is not as common in Mexico as the US, but it is always appreciated.
  • When you shop at a tourist market bartering is expected, they will quote you a price generally 25% to even 50% higher than they will settle for. You can pay full price to be generous and if it seems like a fair price to you. When shopping early in the day they will often give you a special deal if you are their first sale of the day (considered good luck).
  • To be sure, the truth is subject to interpretation when it comes to whether that beautiful bracelet is “real” silver.  Choose intelligently what you believe. But the prices are so inexpensive it is pretty easy to tell when it is costume jewelry.
  • Often at markets the shop owners will offer you a shot of their finest tequila, but be careful about accepting too many offers of this generosity. Of course, it is designed to open your wallet more easily, but the effects are cumulative and it would be best if you keep your faculties about you at all times.

Your Host

Anandha Ray

As a 12 year old, Anandha began seeking the connection to spirit. Her path was varied, from traditional religion to the use of psychedelics to open the pineal gland. At 14 she found Kundalini Yoga and spent two years in complete dedication to the form. At a Summer Solstice, where participants were on a vow of silence for 10 days as they intensively studied yoga in the desert of New Mexico, Anandha observed an amazing style of yoga – done to music. For ten days she observed one woman doing this profound, fluid, beautiful yoga on her daily break. On the 11th day she asked what it was called.

Modern Dance. And thus began a lifetime devotion to dance. A life where creativity, passion and walking a path of integrity and honor were the guiding forces.

AnandhaStJohnBridgeSmFour decades later, much joy and a complete connection to the body as a powerful tool for communicating soul to soul, Anandha is a much awarded dancer/choreographer/artistic director. She has two masters degrees in dance, has taught at a variety of locations from being the chairperson of a university dance program to founding her own dance center/theater. She has worked as a Cultural Ambassador with the US Embassy, receiving standing ovations in seven countries, bringing her own company to provide concerts and workshops to Europe. She has developed unique and exceptional methods for rapidly taking dancers to new levels of performance ability and dance skill. Having trained many professional dancers, in addition to several professional choreographers and directors who now have their own companies, she is excited to have begun a course of teacher training called Tribal Secrets: The Medicine of Movement. She travels extensively, both nationally and internationally, as a featured master teacher, performer and choreographer for universities and festivals where she trains dancers and teaches teachers the exceptional methods of dance and performance training she created.

Her work has been acknowledged in several awards and honors including citations from the US Senate, the California Assembly, induction into the Women’s Hall of Fame and as an honorary KY Colonel. She has been named a visionary to the 21st century, “One of 25 Women Leading the Arts” and won countless awards for her choreography, most recently receiving the highest national award in university dance for the second time (the first being 30 years ago), having her choreography chosen to be performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, June 2016.

For four decades in dance, Anandha has created a spiritual connection of the soul through movement. Walking this path secretly as a professional choreographer who would be shunned and lose funding if the truth was revealed, she didn’t talk about spirituality, but did the work. On many occasion people have been so touched by viewing one of her dances that they have written to Anandha to tell her how it changed their lives. On five occasions, viewers have written her letters telling her that viewing her dance brought back the connection to the world that kept them from committing suicide.

She feels that dance has the power to change the world by providing insight into the soul of humanity, allowing people to feel seen and understood. This is what made her work so successful when her company was performing on the US Embassy tours called “Dance Without Borders”, they illuminated the soul of humanity, the authentic parts of our humanness that we all share no matter where we are from.

This is what guides her work today as she guides dancers to understand the spiritual connection to dance from a viewpoint informed by a lifetime of professional dance as well as one who walks the planet in ceremony.
